Water stained; 70 degrees. Black bass are fair on watermelon and chartreuse soft plastics, craw worms on ½oz. jigs, and Brush Hogs in 12 - 18 feet. Haven't moved up to spawn yet. Striped bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are good on frozen shrimp and cut bait. Yellow catfish are slow.

Lake Conroe Fishing Report - March 16, 2008 - Lake Conditions -March winds are with us and the wind direction changes almost every day with fronts passing through. The barametric pressure has been jumping all over the place; thus the fish patterns have been constantly changing. The lake is just over pool at 201.14 with a very minimum of release going down the river. The surface temperature on main lake has been up and down, moving some fish back into deeper water. Currently we are in the 60’s, with some of the North banks reaching 65 degrees on some days. Catfish fishing has been great. Big fish continue being caught in baited holes. Black bass fishing overall continues to be very good. The early bite has been the best with lots of fish also being caught right before dark. Hybrid fishing has been up and down with really good catches one day and a slow bite the next. The afternoon bite has been the best for hybrids. A few White Bass are being caught jigging spoons on humps in 18 - 22 feet of water. Some have been over two pounds. Crappie fishing has been fair all week with the best bite early. Lots of small fish being caught. Bream fishing continues to be outstanding, with lots of palm size bream being caught in 6 to 10 feet of water.

Black Bass
Bass fishing continues to be great. Changing weather conditions have moved some of the fish deeper; however, lots of smaller fish have been in 3 to 8 feet of water with many larger fish still on the beds. The grass has receded in many areas. Some of the bigger fish this past week have been caught on sandy areas where the wind is restricted and the water is just a degree or two warmer. The fish have also been hugging the bulkheads where the sun hits the bulkhead to warm the water just slightly. Lizards, wacky worms in pumpkin seed, plum/blue and plum have been good baits worked around stumps and other structure near spawning areas. Deep bulkheads with small brush where there is a break in the bulkhead has also been producing some nice fish right up against the bulkheads. The backs of most of the marinas have also been holding fish. Some good solid fish have also been caught on the rocks in the afternoons after the sun warmed the water just a tad when the sun is out.

Catfish
Catfish fishing has been a challenge this week due to the high winds. Many bulkhead fishermen have started early this year using nightcrawlers under a cork and fishing tight to steps and other structure on the bulkheads with a lot of success. The guides have all been finding catfish on baited holes in 8 to 15 feet of water that they have baited that are out of the wind. Fishing the main lake has been almost impossible this week with the high winds. More and more fish are being caught against the bulkheads with shad starting to show up close to the bulkheads early and late. Drift fishing has real tough. The 1097 Bridge has been tough this week also because of the wind. Cut shad, cheese baits, fresh shad caught in a castnet, nightcrawlers and liver seem to be all working for catfish. Pictured fishing with Tex Bonin in a baited hole in 15 feet of water using shrimp dipped in cheese bait, this fisherman caught a 45 pound Blue Catfish. They also got a mess of ‘box fish’ in the 2 - 4 pound range. Many of the fish are already full of eggs and are beginning to make a move to spawning areas. The weather is warming each day and there are more and more signs of shad moving to the shallows.

Bream & Crappie
Crappie fishing has been fair this week on brush piles in 12 - 19 ft of water using black/chartreuse jigs and minnows for bait. Some fish have been in 5-8 feet of water in the backs of marinas. A lot of these fish have been undersized fish. Jigs tipped with minnows have also been good. The early morning bite has been best this week. The 1097 Bridge pilings are still producing good fish; but, the wind has made it a real challenge. Brush piles on secondary points have almost been impossible to fish this week with the wind. Bream fishing continues to be good with lots of good sized fish moving to shallow water. Light tackle provides a action packed adventure when bream fishing. Crickets continue to be the bait of choice for many serious bream fishermen. Meal Worms and regular night crawlers are also a good bet. Several buckets of hand sized bream were caught this week using crickets.
